Kibble vs. Raw Diet

Kibble vs. Raw Diet

Hey Dr. Czamanski, I would like to feed my dog or cat a raw diet… Thoughts?

Well, feeding raw vegetables and fruits is acceptable except for those known to be toxic to dogs and/or cats such as grapes, onions, garlic, and macadamia nuts.  However, feeding raw or under-cooked animal protein is strongly contraindicated as contaminants such as Salmonella spp, Campylobacter spp, E. coli, Norovirus, Listeria monocytogenes, and enterotoxigenic
Staphylococcus aureus may be present.  These organisms may cause serious food-borne illnesses in both dogs and cats.  Moreover, these pathogens can be zoonotic meaning that they can be
transmitted from animals to humans (i.e. pet owners).  Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk of acquiring such organisms from their pet.
Some believe that feeding a raw diet to their dog or cat will prologue life, provide a healthy hair coat, and make their pet stronger. There are no peer-reviewed science studies proving such
benefits of feeding raw or under-cooked animal protein. For more information, visit the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)  web site.
